Fireman and storyteller team up to teach youngsters fire safety

Last Saturday, 17 children learned some important fire safety rules, but they were not sitting in desks at a school and they were not visiting the local fire station. These children came to the Fire Safety Story Hour at the Seeley Lake Public Library.

Home Start of Seeley Lake shared a fire education kit, especially designed for young children, at the local library. The kit included the puppets and a storybook that this story hour was based on. Sheila Devins, Home Start teacher, and Colin Moon, assistant fire chief, presented a program that captured the children's attention, gave them some laughs and taught them fire safety at the same time.

Devins, also a storyteller and magician, used the puppets and fire safety ideas from the kit, along with some of her magic tricks, to emphasize fire safety rules to the audience. Assistant Fire Chief Moon, in a humorous yet realistic way, led children through making a 911 call. Moon then dressed in full fire gear, including breathing apparatus, and managed to maintain humor and authenticity as he guided children in what to do if a fireman approached them. Moon had all the children eagerly following him on hands and knees out of the pretend smoke filled building.

This very special fire safety program was just one of the many topics the Seeley Lake Public Library has covered at the monthly children's story hour.
