Blackhawks face wins and losses last weekend
Winning and losing teaches players a lot about patience and perseverance, two skills the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks demonstrated while playing the St. Regis Tigers and the Hot Spring Savage Heats last weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 10 the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks competed against the St. Regis Tigers at home. The Blackhawks started off the night neck and neck with the Tigers most of the first quarter. At half time, the Tigers led by six points, 19-25. They continued going back and forth through the third quarter, but ultimately the Blackhawks lost to the Tigers, 51-57.
Derrick Brovold, a junior, was the top scorer of the night, leading the Blackhawks with 22 points, 16 of those made in the second half.
Unlike the men's team, the Lady Blackhawks dominated against the Lady Tigers and were up 31-14 at half time. The night ended with the Lady Blackhawks winning, 56-20.
Lillian Boyd, a junior, was the top scorer, ending the night with 18 points.
The next day, Jan. 11, the Blackhawks traveled to Hot Springs. The Blackhawks were up 28-18 at half against the Hot Springs Savage Heats. They went on to make 20 more points in the third quarter, which assured them the victory. The Blackhawks won 64-45.
Blake Irwin, a junior, and Seth Dunster, a senior, were top scorers of the night. Irwin with 14 points, and Dunster with 13 points.
"Over Christmas Break, we were having two-a-days and really trying to work on our offense since we've been relying on our defense," Dunster said. "Now that both are clicking, we are sure to get more conference wins."
The Lady Blackhawks played next, and it was a tough game. The first half was back and forth, the Lady Blackhawks only being up by one at half, 23-22. Second half, the Lady Savage Heats were no match for the Lady Blackhawks' stamina and quick thinking. The Lady Blackhawks won, 46-36.
Boyd and Rilyn Richardson, a senior, were top scorers of the night. Boyd with 16 points, and Richardson with 13.
The Blackhawks play two games next weekend - on Friday, Jan. 17 at home against the Victor Pirates and on Saturday, Jan. 18 away against the Granite Prospectors, one of the Blackhawks main rivals.
