Starting the regular winter sports season

Home game wins and traveling losses to kick off Blackhawk basketball

The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks played in their first regular season games against the Charlo Vikings and the Thompson Fall Bluehawks. The Blackhawks faced off against the Vikings at home on Dec. 19, the first home game of the season.

The Lady Blackhawks kicked off the varsity games for the night. It was a back and forth game - the Vikings being up 14-15 at half - but the Lady Blackhawks didn't let that stop them and brought home their first victory of the season, winning 43-37.

"We have had two starters get injured during preseason, which has caused us to make some big changes. However, I am proud of how quickly we were able to adjust and not let it stop us from playing a tough game to beat Charlo," Ryan Pitman, a sophomore Lady Blackhawk, said.

Aubrey Matthew, a senior, and Laciey Auchenbach, a sophomore, were top scorers of the night. Matthew with 14 points and Auchenbach with eight.

Following the Lady Blackhawks game, the Blackhawks also dominated on the court. They were up 28-14 at half against the Vikings and ended up winning, 55-24.

Blake Irwin and Derrick Brovold, both juniors, scored the most against the Vikings. Irwin scored 13 points and Brovold scored 12.

The next day, Dec. 20, the Blackhawks traveled to Thompson Falls and played the Bluehawks.

The Lady Blackhawks played a hard game but lost 30-54. Matthew, Pitman and Kilty Hanson, a junior, were top scorers. Matthew and Pitman both had eight points and Hanson had six.

The Blackhawks also faced a tough opponent and lost, 45-52. Brovold was the top scorer of the night with 20 points against the Bluehawks.

The Blackhawks will start the new year traveling to Superior to play the Bobcats on Jan. 3.
