A glimpse at the upcoming season
The Seeley-Swan High School boys' and girls' basketball teams competed in their first pre-tournament game of the 2024-2025 basketball season on Dec. 6 and 7. Pre-tournaments allow both basketball teams to get some practice in before the regular season starts.
The boys played against the Noxon Red Devils and won, 66-35 on Dec. 6. The Blackhawks dominated each quarter and had a 14-point lead at halftime. Blake Irwin and Derrick Brovold, both juniors, were the night's top scorers. Irwin had 16 points, and Brovold had 14.
The girls' basketball team faced off against a long-time rival, the Granite Prospectors, and won 46-34. The Lady Blackhawks were up by nine points at halftime. Lillian Boyd, a junior, and Aubrey Matthew, a senior, were the top scorers against the Prospectors. Boyd ended the night with 13 points, and Matthew with 10.
"I'm proud of where we are as a team and I can't wait for us to keep getting gritty and winning games," Boyd said, "The Hamilton tourney was just a glimpse of how hardworking and dedicated we are. This season is going to be one to remember."
The boys then played the Drummond Trojans on Dec. 7 and won 46-24. The Blackhawks were up by 15 points at halftime. Irwin and Brovold were top scorers again, Irwin with 13 and Brovold with 8. Jay Garland, a freshman, also scored his first three points on the high school varsity team.
The first pre-tournament ended with the girls playing the Lady Drummond Trojans, where the Lady Blackhawks won 25-19. The teams were neck and neck. The Lady Blackhawks were only up by four at halftime. Laciey Auchenbach, a sophomore, and Mia Nicholas, a senior, were the night's top scorers - Auchenbach with 10 points and Nicholas with six.
The next weekend, Dec. 13 and 14, the team traveled to Manhattan to compete in another round of pre-tournaments.
The Lady Blackhawks played the West Yellowstone Wolverines and the Manhattan Tigers. The Lady Blackhawks lost against the Wolverines 28-61. Boyd was the girls' top scorer with 19 points, scoring eight in the fourth quarter.
The following game was close, but the Lady Blackhawks beat the Tigers, 35-27. The Lady Blackhawks were up by 10 at halftime. Kilty Hanson, a junior, and Ryan Pitman, a sophomore, were the top scorers of the night - Hanson with 10 points and Pitman with seven.
The Blackhawks also competed against the Wolverines and the Tigers.
The Blackhawks lost against the Wolverines, 48-67. Irwin, Brovold and Quinlan McClure, a junior, were the Blackhawk's top scorers, Irwin with 18 points, Brovold and McClure with eight points. The boys didn't see victory against the Tigers and lost, 33-72. Irwin and Kolten Zurmuehlen, a junior, were the top scorers, Irwin with 12 points and Zurmuehlen with eight.
The Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks compete against Charlo at home on Dec. 19 and travel to Thompson Falls on Dec. 20 to kick off the start of the regular season.
