The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks beat the Saint Regis Tigers, 3-0, in an intense game. After losing the games last week, the Blackhawks had a lot to prove. Hoping to take home victories this weekend, the girls walked onto the court confident that they'd walk over winners.
Starting the first set on Oct. 10, the Tigers were leading, but with quick reflexes and smart play, the Blackhawks made a comeback. Kilty Hanson, a junior, got an ace, leading Seeley-Swan to win the first set, 25-23.
The second set started with the Tigers and Blackhawks neck and neck. Strategically, the Blackhawks began taking the lead, leaving the Tigers in the dust.
Darby Gleason, a junior, got the set-winning hit which led the Blackhawks into the third set. The Blackhawks won the second set, 25-17.
Unlike the first two sets, the Blackhawks were on a roll and dominated the third set.
After the game, Rilyn Richardson, a senior, said, " Our team has gotten closer through the wins and losses. Our coach has helped us be the best that we can be mentally and physically. I am excited to see where it leads us, especially with districts around the corner."
With districts coming up the Blackhawks are anticipating some tough games in the next few weeks. The Blackhawks travel to Superior on Saturday, Oct. 12, to compete in the Mineral County Tournament. The following week the Blackhawks travel to Valley Christian, then play Noxon at home.
On Oct. 11, the Blackhawk football team took a "hard fought loss" against Chinook, Coach Jacob Haley said.
Chinook isn't in the Blackhawk's conference, so the game doesn't count toward playoffs, but Haley wanted to give the team another opportunity to play. He said the boys turned the ball over a lot, unfortunately, but that the defense was good for the most part. A lot of the younger team members got in some good play time, Haley said.
Haley's hoping the last two losses are going to galvanize the team and get them back on the right track. Coming up, they'll face Darby and if they win that game on Friday, they'll make it to playoffs.
Currently, the Blackhawks are 5-1 in conference standing.
"We're going to get it figured out this week," Haley said.
