Homecoming incoming, Blackhawk football remains undefeated

The Blackhawk football team remains undefeated going into homecoming this weekend. On Friday night at 7 p.m. the Blackhawks will take on Valley Christian, who is also undefeated this season, on their turf.

Last weekend's game against St. Regis-Mullan was the closest so far, Coach Jacob Haley said. By the end of the third quarter, the Blackhawks were only up by 10. St. Regis is a "well-coached ball club," Haley said, and the 1 p.m. kickoff on a particularly warm fall day tested the team. Haley said he kept telling the players it was 68 degrees, but it was more like 80.

Despite the heat, Haley said some key athletes stepped up to help clinch the victory. Kolten ZurMuehlen made three touchdowns, Captain Tyler Haines had some great rushing touchdowns, Seth Dunster ran the ball well and Blake Irwin got the team into the offensive, doing a great job facilitating passes.

Haley said the team stands a good chance of making playoffs and his goal has shifted to wanting to win conference. To do so, the Blackhaws would have to win their next three conference games, including this weekend's homecoming match against the undefeated Valley Christian.

Both the Blackhawks and Valley Christian went into the season knowing it would boil down to them, Haley said, and homecoming will be a good measuring point to see where they're at as a team.

"It's definitely one I have had circled on the calendar for a while," Haley said.

The Lady Blackhawks have won six games and lost one this season. Coach Janelle Greenwood said Drummond is a hard team to beat in their own gym, which the Blackhawks weren't able to do last Thursday. The junior varsity team, however, won three out of five games against Drummond, beating the team in their level.

JV player Kyerah Cahoon led in serving against Drummond and landed a bunch of aces, Greenwood said.

The women played better defense and passed the ball better when they were up against Lincoln, Greenwood said. The players had some good moments against Drummond, but Greenwood said they were more consistent against Lincoln.

Greenwood said Kilty Hanson has been dialing in her jump serve, Rilyn Richardson is a force on defense and Captain Aubrey Matthew has been excelling on sets.

The Lady Blackhawks played Big Fork on Tuesday before matching up against Philipsburg for homecoming on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
