Seeley Lake Leos spruce up Highway 83

The Leos club, which partners with the Seeley Lake Lions Club, is back in session now that school has started up.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, the Leos joined the Lions to clean up Highway 83 from the Seeley Lake Community Foundation building to Tamaracks Resort.

James Hayhurst, a Seeley-Swan High School senior, participated in the cleanup and said, "This was my first highway cleanup and it was fun. It's nice to start my day off by helping my community."

The Leos club has a new advisor, Bridget Laird, who has been teaching in Seeley Lake for 14 years.

"This is my first year as the Leos advisor and I hope to carry on with the great work Mary Stone did to build the club," Laird said. "We have a big group of kids who are excited to serve their community."

The Leos have a new President, Aubrey Matthew, and new Vice President, Rilyn Richardson. Both girls have been part of Leos all four years of high school, and helped set up this first highway cleanup.

"Leos has helped me get involved more," Richardson said. "I love being able to help the community here in Seeley Lake."

This year the Leos have roughly 20 people, half of which are seniors. The seniors are hoping to bring in some more underclassmen, and show people that Leos is a fun club to be a part of.

The Leos are dedicated to not only improving the community, but also boosting morality at school. School can be hard, and the Leos know that, which is why they are planning on doing more things at the high school. The Leos are hoping to run a fundraiser to raise money for the school's kitchen, and potentially do some work with the elementary school to raise money as well.

The Leos have many other events coming up such as the hunters' breakfast - hosted by the Seeley Lake Senior Center on Oct. 26 - sandbag filling and they will be offering help stacking firewood.
