Blackhawk football and volleyball remain undefeated a month into the season

Blackhawk football and volleyball teams are rolling past a month of games and remain undefeated.

Football Coach Jacob Haley said this is the first time in 20 years the Blackhawk football team has been four-and-zero to start the season.

"So far this season, in terms of the games, we've gotten off to fast starts, and we did again this game as well," Haley said.

In Friday's match against Arlee, Haley said he knew that team had some pretty good runners and the Blackhawks had to lock in their defense. They did this successfully, landing at 50-0 at halftime.

Some of the players Haley highlighted included team Captain Tyler Haines. Haley said this was Haines's breakout game. He'd been battling an injury this season but managed three touchdowns against Arlee. Seth Dunster scored two touchdowns and Kolten ZurMuehlen scored one for the team as well.

Haley said many of the team's younger players got onto the field in the second half. This has been a pattern for the Blackhawk games so far this season - when they're ahead by a decent margin, Haley tries to get the players with a little less experience some game time. The Blackhawk football team is made up of 19 players this year - including some juniors that haven't played football before and some freshmen that have had a bit more experience - and Haley said every game he's gotten everyone on the field.

Haley's hoping to get to five-and-zero this weekend against St. Regis on Saturday. St. Regis has won three games and lost one so far, so Haley thinks they'll be a good test for the Blackhawks. The following weekend is the homecoming match against Valley, who Haley said is undefeated and a powerhouse. Both teams may be five-and-zero coming into the homecoming game, Haley said.

The Lady Blackhawks beat both Superior and Hot Springs in the past week. Coach Janelle Greenwood said Kendall Jenson made a big appearance on blocking and performed some amazing saves and Kilty Hanson had some great jump serves.

The whole team played with a lot of "hustle and heart," Greenwood said.

The team has a busy week coming up, Greenwood said, with three games this and next week against some tough competition.
