Applications open for Missoula County Community Parks and Recreation Grants

Missoula County Parks, Trails & Open Lands is accepting applications starting Sept. 3 for the annual Community Parks & Recreation Grants Program The program, formerly called the Matching Grants Program, provides funding to help communities create and enhance parks, trails and other public recreation sites and facilities. Staff encourage local nonprofits, schools and community groups to apply for the grant by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.

Ninety thousand dollars is available during the 2025 awards cycle for community-driven projects that improve recreation opportunities on public lands within Missoula County but outside Missoula city limits. Applicants are required to provide a minimum of 25% match of grant funds. Cash, in-kind donations of materials and services and volunteer hours all qualify as a match. There is no minimum or maximum limit for a request to fund a project. Historically, the average amount awarded per project is between $10,000 and $20,000. An organization can submit only one grant application per grant cycle.

The program has awarded more than $1 million over the last 40 years, mainly to projects in Missoula County’s rural communities. In recent years, this unique, partnership-oriented grant program supported construction of the skatepark in Clinton, a playground in Seeley Lake, a new community garden in East Missoula, renovation of historical sites and other improvements to local trail networks and parks.

Prior to applying, interested community members are required to schedule a virtual project consultation with Missoula County Parks & Trails project specialist Bethany Holland. Sign up for a consultation here: https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/eVlvzBvb.

The Missoula County Parks & Trails Advisory Board will review applications and provide a recommendation to the county commissioners later this year. Winners will be announced in early 2025.
