Jack Mackie off critical list after logging accident
Jack Mackie of Seeley Lake has gone from critical to stable condition after an early morning logging accident two weeks ago.
A snag pierced through the seat of his D-6 cat and punctured his midsection on July 18 while working in the Fawn Creek area.
"We almost lost him," Yvonne Mackie, Jack's wife said.
Yvonee said Jack's midsection was crushed. When large bones are broken it is possible for bone marrow to enter the bloodstream, go to the lungs, and cause pneumonia.
Jack got pneumonia, which made the surgery that he needed impossible until he gained some strength, she said.
On Tuesday, July 25, Jack was strong enough for surgery. He made it through the four and half hour surgery, but the pneumonia got work, she said.
The one day in intensive care that was scheduled turned into three days of anguish for his family, Yvonne said. At one point, the doctor told them there was a possibility he could die, she said.
So far, though, Jack has won the battle and is in stable condition, she said.
No date has been given for his release, although she said the doctor told them there is a chance for complete recovery, even though more surgery may be needed.
Jack, 40, has lived in Seeley Lake all his life. He and Yvonne have a 15-year-old daughter, Sharon.
He began work with heavy equipment at the age of 15, working for Champion for 15 years and then for Chet Albert Logging after Champion closed down its logging operation.
He has been with Albert Logging for the past two and a half years.
Albert Logging contacts with Plum Creek Timber Co.
Auverne Albert, Chet's wife, said this was their first accident like this in 39 years.
"This really shook us all up," she said.
She also said they look forward to having Jack back to work as soon as he is able.
Yvonne said she would like to thank all their friends in Seeley Lake for the calls and support they have given the family.
"The people have been so wonderful to us," She said.

Local 4-H members gear up for the fair
The members of the Seeley Lake Trailblazer 4-H Club are making final preparations for this year's Western Montana Fair.
The fair begins on Saturday, Aug. 7 with the dog project judging, followed by the horse project judging on Sunday. On Monday the members attend their project interviews and on Tuesday all of the non-livestock projects must be in place in the 4-H exhibit building. One Wednesday the livestock entries arrive at the fair, and the fair is open to the public.
Thursday afternoon the Seeley Lake Club will work their shift in the 4-H Cafe. All profits from the cafe go to the 4-H foundation. The popular 4-H Market Livestock Sale is held Saturday morning, Aug. 14. Members must be responsible for their fair entries until Sunday, Aug. 15, when the fair officially ends.
Our members have worked very hard all year long preparing for this week. During the 4-H year the members have completed their project manuals, attended training sessions, participated in project competitions and done community service projects.
Everyone is excited about participating in the fair, and would like to invite the Seeley Lake community to stop by the 4-H building and see them there.
