Five people escape serious injuries in head-on collision
Early morning fog was a factor in a glancing head-on collision in Seeley Lake, where five people miraculously escaped serious injury.
Three young Seeley Lake residents in a 1985 Ford Mustang collided with a 1975 Ford pick-up truck in the heavy fog around 8 a.m. last Friday.
The vehicles collided halfway between the Valley Market and the One Stop Convenience Store.
Joe Beatty, the driver of the Mustang, apparently fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the centerline, according to Highway Patrolman Norm Nash, who investigated the accident.
Nash said the driver of the pick-up, Ralph N. Holmes, said he swerved to miss the car, but just couldn't do it fast enough.
Beatty, 22, was taken to Salmon Lake by the Seeley Lake Quick Response Unit where he was transferred to Life Flight and flown to Saint Patrick Hospital.
Life Flight was forced to land at Salmon Lake because of the heavy fog surrounding Seeley Lake.
Michelle Posthumus, 20, was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Helen Williams, 23, was not injured. Both Posthumus and Williams were passengers in the car.
Both Beatty and Posthumus were scheduled to be released Tuesday.
Beatty underwent two surgeries on his left arm and shoulder, according to the spokesman at Saint Patrick Hospital.
Posthumus suffered injuries to her left leg and face.
Holmes, 65, and his passenger, Dave Holmes of Riverside, California were not hospitalized. The Holmes' were on vacation and had been staying at Placid Lake, according to Nash.
Nash said Beatty and his two passengers were all wearing seat belts, "Otherwise one of them would probably have been killed," Nash said.
No citations have been issued and the accident is still under investigation, according to Nash.
