Four wrestlers in national meet, Schwarz takes third

Four area wrestlers represented Seeley Swan and Montana in the AAU/USA Grand National Wrestling Championships held July 7-9 in Billings. Competitions consisted of the best wrestlers from 38 states and Canada.

These following young men are to be congratulated for their efforts and dedication to the sport of wrestling:

Third place Tyler Schwarz

Seventh place Jacob Baker

Eighth place Pat Morin

15th place Ariah Baker

Schwarz and Jacob and Ariah Baker also competed in the Greco-Roman Championships with Tyler placing second.

The 1989 season is now over. Many goals and accomplishments were achieved this season. We started with only a handful of kids joining, but they were determined to be champions. David Boone, Pat Moring and Lelan Anders went undefeated until the State Tournament. David Boone is still undefeated for 1989. Seeley-Swan produced two state champions this year, something that hasn’t happened for quite some time, 10 years to be exact. David Boone and Tyler Schwarz knew what it would take and they emerged champions.

But the season wasn’t over after State. We ventured in the Regional Tournament hoping to qualify for the Grand National Tournament. Again Seeley-Swan was well represented. Nick Livingston and Ariah Baker wrestled tough and qualified for Nationals. Jacob Baker placed sixth; Pat Morin placed fifth and Tyler Schwarz is the 1989 Northwest Regional Champion.

Following was the Grand National Tournament with the results listed in this article.

These wrestlers will hopefully be back next year to lead the team in what looks like will be another successful season. The 1990 Regional Tournament is in Rapid City, South Dakota again and we will be there hopefully with a bigger and even stronger team. The Grand National Tournament is in Indianapolis, Indiana next year and yes, it looks as though Seeley-Swan will be represented there also.

The Wrestling Club is very appreciative to all those who volunteered their time, Kit Herman our secretary-treasurer; Sandi Baker and Karen Schwarz for fundraising and PR; Dee Baker, Larry Schwarz, Bill Boone, John Anders, Mike Dellwo and Randy Livingston and Guy Johnson for coaching.

The community was very supportive and special appreciation was given to sponsors and those who donated money and merchandise, as well as Seeley-Swan High School and the Seeley Lake Elementary School for the use of their equipment and facilities.

The 1990 season looks bright and with the continued support of our community, we will accomplish bigger and better things.

Seeley-Swan has once again established itself as a team to be reckoned with. One final note, Coach Hallam will be back for yet another season.

Balcom blazes a trail…again

Zach Balcom competed at the Big Sky Games in Billings on July 17 and 18 and took the field by storm.

This competition was the first time Balcom had thrown discus and shotput with the high school weights, but it didn’t hold him back.

Throwing the 12 pound shot, Balcom took first place with a throw of 40’ 6”. Balcom took second place with the 1.6 kg discus with a throw of 100’ 3”. He was competing in the 14-15 year old age group.

Balcom’s remarkable throws at this past weekend’s meet qualified him to compete in the National State Games Competition, which will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado in June 2005.

Congratulations…again…Zach on your achievement! Thank you for doing a terrific job representing our community.
