Tim Ryan displays an authentic fish trap that he made from willow and dogbane cordage. Ryan, department head of cultural and language studies at the Salish Kootenai College, specializes in recreating authentic Indigenous equipment for hunting, harvesting, eating and cooking. Ryan spoke at the native plant conference on how the Indigenous seasonal calendar shapes the activities of Indigenous people in their hunting, gathering and travel.
Nearly 90 plant enthusiasts gathered for Prairies to Potholes, the 2024 Native Plant Society annual meeting held at Camp Utmost June 28-30. The meeting was highlighted by 22 workshops and field trips throughout the Blackfoot and Seeley valleys. Trips visited public and private locations from Gold Creek to Browns Lake and north to Clearwater Lake.
"This was a remarkable way to see some of the plant and ecosystem variety in the Swan Valley," Susan Ballinger, from Washington, said. "I've been a member of the Native Plant Society for five years so I can find out about their field trips when I come to the family cabin north of Seeley Lake."
