Two programs help older adults receive nutritious food in Seeley Lake

Now that summer is here, many of us think fondly about the delicious fresh fruits and vegetables found at our local Farmers Markets. In Seeley Lake, we have a wonderful program to help older adults in the community receive nutritious, local food.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), or as many call it, Farmers Market Coupons, is made possible through grant money from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Anyone aged 60 and older who meets the income guidelines can call (406) 728-7682 to make an appointment or stop by the Seeley Lake Missoula Aging Services Office on Fridays to apply for the coupons valued at $48.00. The coupons can be redeemed locally at 3150 MT Highway 83 North (Seeley Lake Community Foundation building) during Seeley Lake Sunday Market, held each Sunday from 10 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. from June 16 through September 1.

The ROOTS Program is another nutrition program available to older adults year-round in the Seeley Lake community. The Missoula Food Bank and Community Center and the Department of Health and Human Services have partnered to deliver nutritious food packages to the recipients’ homes every month, at no cost. Volunteer drivers deliver the monthly packages to participants. We can’t thank these volunteers enough for their love and dedication to the ROOTS Program and the current recipients. To qualify for the ROOTS Program, individuals must be 60 or older and meet income guidelines.

If your household is interested in applying or learning more about the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program or the ROOTS Program, please call (406) 728-7682 to make an appointment with Kristin Mason or stop by the Seeley Lake Missoula Aging Services Office located at 3150 MT Highway 83 North (inside the Seeley Lake Community Foundation) on Fridays.
