Game range opens with new parameters

Instead of a line of trucks overflowing with antler hunters bombing through the west gate of the Clearwater-Blackfoot Game Range on opening day, 115 vehicles followed a game warden driving a side-by-side pilot vehicle through the east gate off Woodworth Road.

Safety concerns because of excessive traffic around the Game Range west gate on opening day led Montana Fish and Game to explore options for the management of opening day. People camping and parking across Highway 83 and crossing the highway on foot, as well as dozens of parked cars along the shoulder for up to a month before opening day were the concerns cited. Montana Fish and Game began seeking public comment in fall of 2023 to explore potential changes.

2024 marked the first year with changes, which focused on using the east gate as the main entrance for opening day on May 15 at noon. Traditionally this date is very popular for antler hunters who want to be the first humans on land that's been reserved for wildlife since Dec. 2 of the previous year.

"We were glad that people weren't camping, parking and crossing Highway 83," Kyle Miller, Missoula Game Warden Captain, said. "The main point of the changes was to improve public safety along Highway 83. There was good compliance with parking rules."

Participants began registration for 2024 access in early April. All participants that used the online system were entered in a random number drawing for places in line. People then RSVP'd to indicate if they were coming, and numbers were readjusted for people who gave up their place in the sequence. Registration was not required. Those who didn't want a first crack at entering the Game Range were able to enter any time after those pre-registered.

"Initially we had 650 people sign up," Miller said. "About 250 cars actually showed up. A lot of people carpooled with family and friends who drew earlier numbers."

An overflow lot was set up near the east gate for those who hadn't signed up for a place in line. Those jumping in with friends could leave their cars in the overflow lot. The west gate opened as the pilot vehicle reached it. Many horse trailers had parked in designated areas along Highway 83 and individuals who walked in at opening time parked well off the shoulder. The Salmon Lake entrance and other access points were used as well.

A survey was sent to all participants for feedback on the first year of the new system.

"We want to hear what participants this year thought, and those who maybe chose not to participate because of the changes," Vivaca Crowser, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Regional Information and Education Manager, said. "I know we'll be making adjustments before next year based on that input. All-in-all, it felt like a good day out there."

Those who want to share feedback are asked to do so on a form accessible from this site: https://fwp.mt.gov/conservation/wildlife-management-areas/blackfoot-clearwater-antler-hunting
