Eighth graders excel in history project
Five Seeley Lake eighth graders received 'excellence ratings' as this area's first participants in Montana History Day, an annual qualifying competition held at the State Capitol each spring as a preliminary to National History Days in Washington, D.C.
Shawn Helvick and Jason Zebarth entered a group project on Camp Remini, Montana's World War II training camp for sled dog search and rescue teams.
Melita Cahoon, Laurie Leonard and Shari Morin presented a group performance entry depicting a local history research topic, a history of our valley's schools as seen through the reminiscences of Elta Townsend.
The major portion of their background preparation was completed in Project 89, an eighth grade social studies language arts curriculum component in which all the students have been researching topics such as education, logging, and 20th century wars at both national and state levels.
In addition to a major research term paper on their topic, the students have also conducted oral history interviews in Mr. Nelson's classes. Shawn Helvick visited sites and interviewed World War II Camp Remini veterans in Helena. The education group conducted a classroom interview with "Butch" Townsend and then transcribed the tape into a dramatic presentation for "History Day."

Fire at Pyramid Lumber
Around 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, a fire was reported at Pyramid Lumber in Seeley Lake.
The fire was classified as an "industrial responsae" and fire trucks from both Seeley Lake and Condon responded.
Approximately 40 firefighters worked to extinguish fires in two hoppers. The hoppers are used for housing shavings. Unfortunately, the units are enclosed and do not permit direct access from above. Consequently, the fire department had to cautiously open the dispensing doors to release the burning shavings to extinguish them.
Although two ambulances were on hand, no injuries were incurred on this fire call.
