Librarian leaves after 10 years
Swan Valley branch librarian Susie Cox received a "going away party" from her friends and family at the Swan Valley Library last Wednesday. Susie, her husband Al, and their two daughters are moving to Arizona this month. Susie left on Saturday to visit her aunt in California who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Part of the reason that the Cox family is leaving the Swan Valley is to care for Susie's aunt, who will soon move with the family to Sedona, Arizona.
Cox has been the librarian at Swan Valley for 10 years. She began working there when the library opened in Sept. 1979. Before that, she and dozens of other local residents, spent many hours trying to raise money and establish the local facility. Fern Kauffman of Swan Valley has been working as assistant librarian in recent years and will be taking over Susie's duties at the library.
When asked about how she feels that the library has changed in the past ten years, Susie responded, "It's grown. The demand for books here has increased. But the budgets have continually declined. What's happening to libraries in Montana is a real tragedy."
Cox hopes to go to work at the Sedona library next year. That facility is being expanded and improved this summer.

Historical Museum and Visitor's Center to Open May 15
After countless hours of hard work, the new Historical Museum and Visitor's Center will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 15.
Although the formal grand opening celebration will be in the fall, the center will be open starting this weekend with countless displays for public viewing.
The opening is just in time for the start of the summer flow of visitors through our area. The Visitor's Center is anticipating a great flow through the building.
On Saturday, Dan Cainan, a long time resident and former Seeley Lake Rural Fire Department member, will be out front of the museum with the 1927 fire truck display. Cainan was involved in the purchase of the truck and will be happy to talk to visitors about its history in the community.
The SLRFD, State Fire Department and US Forest Service Fire Division will also have a display.
"One of the highlights of our displays will be Jackie Buitenhuis' display of antique dolls," noted Addrien Marx. "The Tamarack Resort is having their 75th anniversary this summer and they're having a display." The Seeley Lake Baptist Church is celebrating their 50th anniversary and they will also have a display.
"We urge everyone to stop by and be inquisitive and ask questions," said Marx. "This is just the beginning of the ever growing interpretation of history."
The Historical Museum welcomes all community members to share oral history, artifacts and resources they might have in possession.
