Lady Blackhawk wins 200-meter dash, PRs abound for track and field team

At last weekend's track and field meet in Polson, Sophomore Lillian Boyd won the women's varsity 200-meter dash. This was a personal record time for Boyd - 28.57 seconds - and it was one of many PRs for the Blackhawk track and field teams.

Coach Mike Haines said there were 24 PRs total throughout the meet. Some of that number did include first-time times. But there were many improvements and it was a warmer meet day, which Haines thought helped.

"The kids have been working hard and have pretty good attitudes," Haines said. "That always helps, too."

No Blackhawks qualified for state in Polson, but many came close. Kilty Hanson, a sophomore, was about four inches away in the long jump, Haines said, and Laciey Auchenbach threw 94 feet and eight inches in javelin. Most women throw between 50 or 70 feet when they first start out, Haines said. Auchenbach also PRed in the discus, throwing 92 feet and four inches.

On Saturday the Blackhawks will travel to Missoula to compete at Big Sky High School in the Seeley-Swan Invitational - the school's first hosted meet. In Polson, athletes competed against 17 teams, Haines said, and at Big Sky High School they'll go up against 27, which will be "very, very competitive," he said.
