County Canine officer on duty in Condon

Robert E. Parcell has assumed duties as the new deputy sheriff in Condon and the Swan Valley area, according to Captain Jerry Crego, commander of the sheriff's office.

Parcell began work here April 1 and he, his wife and children have moved to the Condon area.

Parcell is Missoula County's only canine officer and he was in the Clearwater and Swan Valley's last fall giving demonstrations with his dog, "Thunder," during the national Red Ribbon drug awareness campaign last fall.

Parcell is replacing Duane Steinke who has served on a temporary basis here when Scott McDonald transferred last fall. Steinke is back in Missoula running the civil division of the Sheriff's office.

Parcel has been with the Missoula County Sheriff's Office since November of 1982. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and is active in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Swan Valley residents wanting to reach the sheriff's office should call 911, Captain Crego said.

High school music students ready to compete

Music Students from Seeley Swan High School will compete against 23 area high schools in the District Music Festival on April 16 and 17. The competition will be held at Hellgate High School in Missoula.

The 22 member band and 29 member choir will compete on April 16. Then the soloist and small ensembles are scheduled for the second day of the competition.

Soprano Katie Williams and altos Kim Brekke and Ashley Pena are the vocal entrants for solo and duet performances. The woodwind and brass soloists are: Ronnie Richards, trumpet; Brandon Friede, tuba; Ben Stratton, trombone; Mariah Childs, alto clarinet; and Jon Phipps, trombone.

The competitors are judged against a standard for a number of criteria, including pitch, rhythm, tone, technique and interpretation. They are given an overall rating ranging from superior to poor.

"Those who earn a superior rating will go on to the State Music Festival in Helena on May 1 and 2," said SSHS music teacher, Bob Green.

SSSH musicians compete in the District Music Festival every year.
