Volunteerism abounds

One of the many things I love about Seeley Lake is the volunteerism I see everywhere. When I bought my home here almost 10 years ago, one of the things I planned to do when I retired to Seeley full time was volunteer in some fashion to serve the community. That is actually how I ended up on the DARLOA BOD. I felt that the DARLOA BOD had arrived at a more harmonious place than it had been in some preceding years and I wanted to help keep it that way. Of course HOA’s have a way of always having some contention and DARLOA (being quite large) is no exception. I also wanted to do something that benefitted the whole community and not just the neighborhood that I lived in, as well as getting involved in something that was undeniably positive, without dissension.

I didn’t have to look far. The wonderful part of being in a small community is that it is less overwhelming and more personable. It kind of sucks you into the local pace of life. I went to the first high school sporting events and musical theater performances I had been to in years. The next thing I know, I’m at a spaghetti dinner/auction sponsored by the SSHS Booster Club! While that may not be direct volunteerism, anything that supports positive local activities is a great thing in my book. And the more of these kinds of things you do, the more great things you find to do! You also meet a lot of good people at these types of activities.

Last year I was invited to join the Seeley Lake Lions Club. It has been one the more enjoyable things I have done. It is neat to participate in a service organization that does so much good for so many in Seeley. Like many organizations, there is a core group that is really the driving force behind the Lions and watching those people do what they do without seeking praise or recognition is a great reminder of what volunteerism/service is all about. We also have a lot of “worker bees” that are always there when some “hands” are needed.

One of the best aspects of volunteerism in Seeley Lake is the fact that there really is something for everyone. From volunteers at the fire department and search and rescue, to people helping collect data for the CRC or serving on the Community Council. We all have different strengths and availability. Find what suits yours. Make a difference. You will be glad you did!
