May Day Tea at the Ovando school

On Thursday, May 18 the Ovando school hosted the annual May Day Tea event to close out the school year and showcase the talents of current students before an audience of parents and community members.

Every year the Ovando School closes out with a student production, a variety show which the students spend weeks preparing for.

"At the end of April we're starting to build sets and make sure we've got props in order," said Nathan Graves, a teacher at the Ovando school who helped with this year's production.

This year's May Day Tea featured a number of musical pieces and dances, with a backdrop made to look like the Ovando downtown boardwalk.

All the set pieces and scripts are crafted by the students, with the help of teachers.

"We don't take a script from anything, we just kind of write each section on our own," Graves said. "The kids work on it. They'll write paragraphs, and we'll work together to make sure those are all accurate and correct.

Except for the closing act which was a rendition of "Six Feet Apart" by country singer Luke Combs, lip-synced by Sawyer Hessler, this year's only graduating eighth grader.

"It's a really great song," Graves said. "It's all about bringing people together."
