In December of 2022, Seeley-Swan High School senior Owen Hoag was nominated for The U.S. Military Academy at West Point by Senator Jon Tester.
Tester nominated Hoag based on his academic achievements, participation in extracurricular activities, and dedication to future service in the United States Military. The nomination was one of the first steps of many for Hoag to apply to West Point.
Since then, Hoag has been appointed to the academy and looks forward to what lies ahead. Hoag says participating in sports throughout high school has helped him prepare for West Point.
“A big part of that (playing sports) is learning discipline and being able to work through school and sports while accomplishing everything you need to do,” Hoag said.
He will be running on the Black Knights track and field team, and looks forward to continuing his athletic career as well.
After graduating West Point, Hoag is required to serve five years of active duty service followed by three years of reserve service.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge - , it’s definitely not easy,” Hoag said.
Although the process has been a challenge, he is grateful for all the support from his friends and family, especially from his mom, Kelly Hoag.
“Without her, I wouldn’t even come close to this far. She keeps me on track and makes sure I get everything done.”
