Strong start for Seeley Lake Nordic ski racers

On Saturday, Jan. 7, Seeley Lake Nordic skiers participated in their first race of the season - The Glacier Glide in Whitefish, Montana.

After only one week of practice, the racers dove in, with two of them skiing a 3k pursuit (3 kilometers of classic style followed by 3 kilometers of skate style skiing), and two racing a 3k skate. Kieu Snow (11) and Kimber Hanson (11) both skied a 3k pursuit, while Land Neudecker (11) and his sister Loryn (10) Nuedecker both raced the 3K skate. All Seeley racers placed in their age groups.

The following weekend, Jan. 14, racers from Seeley traveled to Missoula for the second annual MTXC Ice Badger Loppet race. Land Neudecker placed first in his age group for the boys, Kieu Snow placed first for the girls, and Kimber Hansen placed third. Two current Seeley-Swan High School students and one former SSHS student joined the team in a 5k race around the University Golf Course. Cora Stone, a senior at SSHS took first in her age group and Hattie Batchelder, a junior, took third. Ella Batchelder, former Seeley Lake Nordic racer who now attends the University of Montana, took first in her age group as well.

"All the kids are looking forward to the coming season, and we have several kids new to skiing this year that are extremely excited to learn how to race," says program director Bridget Laird.
