Firewood Day

CONDON – Swan Valley Connections is hosting our annual Community Firewood Day volunteer event! We’ll be splitting, delivering, and stacking wood for a full list of people in need in the Swan Valley community.

Volunteers will meet at the Condon Work Center (MM 42.9 MT Hwy 83, Condon, MT 59826) at 9am foramndatory safety meeting. There will be a complimentary volunteer BBQ, sponsored by Mannix Family Grass-finished Beef, following the work day.

Please bring your own lunch/snacks, ear and eye protection and gloves. Please wear chainsaw chaps if you plan on sawing.

Waterfowl, pheasant and antelope hunting seasons open

HELENA – Hunting for ducks, coots and geese opened Oct. 1.

Here are a few reminders:

• The aggregate daily bag for dark geese in the Pacific Flyway has increased from four to five. Dark geese include Canada geese, cackling geese and white-fronted geese (any geese other than snow, blue and Ross’s geese).

• The Central Flyway is divided into two “zones” in order to increase opportunity. The two zones have different season dates. Zone 2, includes Big Horn, Carbon, Custer, Prairie, Rosebud, Treasure and Yellowstone counties and has a split season. To view the season dates, go to https://fwp.mt.gov/hunt/regulations/migratory-bird or review the migratory bird regulations. Zone 1 includes all other counties in the Central Flyway portion of Montana.

Pheasant season opens Oct. 8. Hunting seasons for fall turkey, mountain grouse, sharp-tailed grouse and partridge are already open.

The general season for antelope opens Oct. 8. General seasons for deer and elk open Oct. 22; the two-day youth deer hunt is Oct. 20 and 21.

4-H scholarships available

4-H participants interested in applying for a $500 scholarship to use toward the purchase of their steer for the 2023 Fair are encouraged to apply for the Mark Teague Memorial Scholarship. Applications are due by Oct. 14.

Mushers

meet Oct. 8

Our Dryland Training and Montana Mountain Mushers meeting is Oct. 8.

Everything starts at 9am at the Morrell Creek Pavillion with Dryland Training. The MMM meeting starts at 11:30am with sandwich lunch and potluck for salads and desserts.

At 1:30 p.m. mushers will head to Lincoln (Pine Grove Campground near Lincoln for the Race to the Sky/Jack Beckstrom bridge sign dedication at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Everything continues with dryland training on Sunday morning at 9am

Beaver Creek Bridge dedicated

We will have a Bridge Dedicatio at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 at the bridge site which is near the Beaver Creek Campground just outside Lincoln.

The US Forest Service and the Montana Mountain Mushers have joined together to dedicate the new bridge across Beaver Creek Road, near Lincoln.

The sign commemorates Race to the Sky and its beginnings through today, Jack Beckstrom’s part in seeing the race happen and history of the race. There will be representatives from the organizations to speak briefly about the bridge/sign. Everyone is invited.

The US Forest Service, Lincoln District, placed a permanent bridge over Beaver Creek giving multi-use access for Race to the Sky trails connecting Lincoln to Seeley Lake for the 300 mile sled dog race held every February.

Directions: About halfamle west of Lincoln is a road called Beaver Creek Road, head north on Beaver Creek Road, (you are on the flats near Lincoln but will be climbing slightly to rolling hills), stay left at the Y (on Beaver Creek Road) to Pine Grove Campground, go through campground, (about 5 miles from highway turn-off), at the north end of the campground there is an ATV parking area. Park there and the bridge is about 100 yards from the ATV parking area right on the creek. The campground is about 5 miles from the highway turn-off near Lincoln.

Adult growing classes offered

Potomac School District is offering a free adult class on growing and eating montana foods in a challenging and changing climate.

No matter your gardening background or level, come join this class.

The class will be a combination of classroom learning and hands-on doing.

Class will take place at the school or Potomac Community Center and at the garden boxes next to the Potomac Library (unless otherwise notified). It will be taught in four workshops/sessions during the 2022-2023 school year—each session being 2.5 to 3 hours long. Class materials and supplies will be provided.

SLCC to discuss Holland proposal

The Seeley Lake Community Council will meet Monday, Oct. 10 at the Barn (2920 Highway 83). Refreshments will be served at 5:30, and the meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
