SEELEY LAKE – A grant-funded, area support group designed to increase support to victims of violence will begin meeting weekly from 6 - 8:30 p.m., Oct. 4 at the Seeley Lake Foundation building.
The group will meet every Tuesday through Nov. 15.
Community members who were victims of abuse or caregivers to those who were victimized are welcome to attend, said Jama Mauldin, social worker licensure candidate.
Mauldin, with Angela Harris, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, will teach how brains respond to trauma, then lead a group discussion.
“We feel like those connections relationally are what creates resiliency and buffers from all of the adversity that come from the world,” Mauldin said. “When we can partner with education on how your brain works and look at things from another lens, not good or bad. This is about how your brain develops strategies to meet those basic biological needs, take that tendency to blame ourselves for everything and not be so hard and critical on ourselves.”
Funding for the support group is through the Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Program Grant issued through the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) Office of Violence Against Women (OVW). Each participant will receive $30 weekly to cover childcare or other costs that might be associated with the class, Mauldin said.
The idea is instead of asking, ‘what is wrong with the person?’ ask why the behaviors happen that way, Mauldin said. An understanding of the why can lead to new understanding, she said.
The class size is limited to 10 at this time, Mauldin said. Additional classes will be offered in the Spring 2023, Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.
