Seeley Lake Library News

SEELEY LAKE – It has been a great summer and there are a lot of interesting things happening at the Seeley Lake Library this month and next.

A hearty “thank you” to all who participated in this year’s Summer Reading Program! Over 30 kids registered and 30 completed Reading Logs were returned. A handful of kids completed two or even three reading logs for additional chances to win the grand prizes. This year’s winners were:

• Brittney Kelley, age 10 ($40 Gift Card for Stageline Pizza)

• Aliyah Homen, age 11 ($20 Gift Card for Stageline pizza)

• Jack House, age 12 (Fleece Blanket, Stuffed Animal, Book)

• Seraphina Arroyo, age 6 (Crocheted Edge Blanket and Book)

Thank you also to all the community members who donated funds and materials for this amazing program! Your support is helping our kids to keep reading through the summer! Special thanks to Linda Orr who crochets a blanket every year for this program--your unwavering commitment is so appreciated.

The Seeley Lake Library Book Club meets the first Thursday of every month. This month’s book is “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” by Matthew Desmond (2016).

The dust jacket flap reads, “Even in the most desolate areas of American cities, evictions used to be rare. But today, most poor renting families are spending more than half of their income on housing and eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers ... [In this book], Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America’s vast inequality--and to people’s determination and intelligence in the face of hardship.”

Housing is a major concern in rural areas also - as we know full well here in Seeley Lake. Come by the library to check out a copy of this book. The book will be discussed Thursday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. in the Seeley Lake Branch Library. Refreshments provided.

The Seeley Lake Library is one of 14 libraries across the state of Montana to receive a $3,500 grant from Humanities Montana to participate in the Democracy Project.

The Democracy Project engages teens in civic action through partnerships with local libraries, community organizers and Humanities Montana. This program gives teens the resources to effect change and know their role in an evolving democracy through direct participation. Students ages 13 – 19 work for six months on projects they feel are vital to their community, ending with a public showcase.

This program is free. Interested parents and youth as well as local community civics groups are invited to come to the library Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. for information about this program.

For more information call the library at 406-677-8995 if you’re interested and unable to attend. Check out the website for more information and video: https://www.humanitiesmontana.org/democracy-project/.
