Memory Care Support available in Missoula and Ravalli Counties

In 2021, Missoula Aging Services (MAS) launched a program aimed at increasing support for older adults living with memory loss in our community. It has already served over 75 people since it began just over a year ago.

The Memory Care Support Services program was created in response to the growing number of older adults in Missoula and Ravalli Counties that are living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

Memory Care Support Services is a no-cost service that starts with a one-on-one meeting to screen for eligibility, identify specific goals and learn about the client’s unique situation. The goal of Memory Care Support Services is to provide the community member with personalized support for their unique needs to help them remain safely in their home. This can include services such as Meals on Wheels which provides regular home delivered meals with a friendly check-in. Home modifications can be made to improve home safety.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, about one out of every 10 older adults in Montana is living with Alzheimer’s disease. It is estimated that there are around 3,000 people living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias in Missoula and Ravalli counties. Many are living with a family caregiver but others are living alone in the community.

Though there are assisted living facilities that provide dementia care, there are fewer options available for people who are living in their own homes. Memory Care Support Services provides dedicated support for older adults living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias and is supported by a three-year national grant from the Administration of Community Living (ACL).

“A diagnosis of memory loss or noticing issues with memory can feel overwhelming and intimidating. You or your loved ones don’t have to face it alone. We are here to help. Memory Care Support Services can assist people in planning to age in place and keep people living where they want to live,” said Gabe Goeres, Care Management Program Manager at MAS.

In cases where someone is living alone with dementia, Memory Care Support Services will match the individual with a Care Manager who can work with them over time and help make sure they’re getting the support they need to continue living safely at home.

If a family member is providing care, Family Caregiver Support Specialists can work with them to embrace their caregiving responsibilities, while also taking time to care for themselves.

Caregiving support is offered through resources such as support groups, classes and one-on-one meetings with a Family Caregiver Support Specialist. Support groups available over Zoom have been both helpful and convenient for people living in rural areas, and for those providing round-the-clock care for a loved one.

Memory Care Support Services can also help with planning. This includes supported decision making, Medicaid and Medicare consultations and assistance with other important aspects of life. They can also provide referrals to healthcare providers and partner organizations.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease is not required to utilize Memory Care Support Services. If you or a family member would benefit from this program, visit https://missoulaagingservices.org/ or call 406-728-768.
