Seniors receive scholarships, awards

SEELEY LAKE - Eight seniors at Seeley-Swan High School received scholarships from organizations within the Seeley Lake community and beyond for their outstanding academic performances, athletic achievements and participation in extracurricular activities.

Some local businesses and organizations that funded the scholarships include Alpine Artisans, Inc., Loving Hearts Thrift Store, Grizzly Claw Trading Company, The Seeley Lake Rural Fire Department and the Seeley Lake Lions Club.

Loving Hearts awarded Chase Haines, Sariah Maughan, Tegan Mauldin and Walker McDonald $1,000 scholarships, based on their academic excellence and essays they wrote about their work in and outside of school. The scholarship is not exclusive to college tuition but reserved for college-related expenses, including housing or online-school. Funds were raised during Loving Hearts annual fashion show in August.

"We really look at their activities in the community, they're for their future and what they're going to or want to be," said Joyce Love, manager of Loving Hearts.

Alpine Artisans awarded senior student Chase Haines a $1,000 scholarship for his outstanding academic performance and artistic eye. The scholarship required applicants to send in three letters of recommendation, an essay and a portfolio of their artistic work.

According to Laura Jalehto, a member of Alpine Artisans, Haines turned in his application nearly a month before the deadline.

She added all the recommendations complimented Haines for his organization, work ethic, talent, responsibility and kindness. Haines plans to attend Montana State University in the fall. Jalehto hopes the scholarship will continue to support artists in the Seeley Swan Valley.

"I think the purpose of our scholarship is that this valley has a lot of people, like musicians and artists," Jalehto said. "We really want to promote that and help people, young people, from this area work towards keeping that it's part of their future."
