SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Swan High School Golf season is in full swing with a new coach Colleen Stone. Mia Nicholas, a freshman homeschool student, qualified for state shooting a 98 during her first high school tournament played in Hamilton, March 31.
Other individual scores from the Hamilton Tournament are: junior Ava Thornsberry, 114, senior Tegan Mauldin, participated but no score available, junior Ari Nicholas, 82, freshman Aiden Postumus, 92; junior Ben Haley, 95, freshman Trey Miller, 116 and junior Chris Auchenbach, 128. A. Nicholas didn't qualify for state since his score was not considered an official score, Stone said.
The Stevensville Tournament on April 6 was match play. The boys won four of seven matches and the girls three of four. There were no individual scores.
Stone is the new coach this season. She agreed to step in and fill the vacancy left by Kellen Palmer last year.
"I love golf," Stone said, "I'm not the best golfer in the world but I love it. I am here for moral support, organization and transportation. We have Nathan [Miller, Double Arrow Golf Pro] for the skill end of it. He is key to the program, we are lucky to have him."
Montana High School Association changed the qualifying scores for 2022. The board felt there were too many kids qualifying for state and the courses could not accommodate those numbers, Stone said. This year girls must shoot 100 or less and boys 85 or less to automatically qualify. Golfers who don't automatically qualify have an opportunity to qualify at the Divisional Tournament in Shelby, May 9th this year, another addition for Class C in 2022.
The Seeley-Swan High School golf team has several returning members this year and the addition of two homeschool students.
The Girls' Team returning members include Mauldin, A. Thornsberry and junior Cora Stone. New to the team are senior Sara Stevenson and freshman M. Nicholas.
The Boys' Team members returning are juniors Aaron Jungers, Case Anderson, and Haley. New members are juniors Kaden Thornsberry, Auchenbach, Posthumus and A. Nicholas.
This week's tournaments have been canceled due to weather. The next tournament is April 21st at Old Works in Anaconda. Teams can only take five boys and five girls to each tournament. Stone said, the team tries to mix it up and take different groups so everyone has a chance to participate in tournament play.
