Board members elected by acclamation, school board elections canceled

MISSOULA COUNTY - Following election by acclamation of numerous candidates, the Missoula Board of County Commissioners canceled several May 3 special district elections. Potomac School, Seeley Lake Elementary, Sunset School and Swan Valley School also canceled their Trustee elections after applicants filled the open positions.

There are still several board positions that remain unfilled, as indicated in the list below. Commissioners are seeking applicants to fill these board positions, which will become vacant May 31. Applicants must be residents of Missoula County and at least 18 years old. Additional residency requirements may apply. All board members serve on a volunteer basis.

Per resolutions the County Commissioners adopted on March 24, the following local special district elections have been canceled:

• Greenough-Potomac Rural Fire Service Area: Candidate Jennifer L. Iverson was elected by acclamation to a new three-year term.

Commissioners are seeking applicants to fill the remainder of a three-year term that runs through May 31, 2024. At that time, if the board member wishes to continue serving, they will need to file as a candidate in the special district elections.

• Seeley Lake Community Council: Candidates Thomas M. Browder and John A. Richards were elected by acclamation to new three-year terms. Commissioners are seeking applicants to fill one three-year term that runs June 1, 2022 through May 31, 2025. At that time, if the council member wishes to continue serving, they will need to file as a candidate in the special district elections. Applicants must be residents of the Seeley Lake School District #34. Vacant terms are to be applied for online and appointed by the Missoula Board of County Commissioners.

Seeley Lake Sewer District: Candidates Pat M. Goodover II, Cheryl ‘Cheri’ Thompson and Troy Spence were elected by acclamation to new four-year terms.

• Seeley Lake Water District: Candidates Freda Rathbun and Charles Hahn were elected by acclamation to new four-year terms.

• Seeley Lake – Swan Valley Hospital District: Candidates Walter Hill and Suzanne Philippus were elected by acclamation to new three-year terms.

Swan Valley Community Council: Candidate Daniel A. Saari was elected by acclamation to a new three-year term. Commissioners are seeking applicants to fill one, three-year term of June 1, 2022 through May 31, 2025, and the remainder of one vacant term through May 31, 2023. At that time, if the council members wish to continue serving, they will need to file as a candidate in the special district elections.

Applicants must be residents of the Swan Valley Community Council boundary, which has the same geographic boundaries of Elementary School District No. 33.

Swan Valley Fire Service Area: Candidate John K. Mercer was elected by acclamation to a new three-year term.

School District elections were cancelled due to the same number of applicants for the open positions:

• Potomac School District #11: Candidates Tom Petersen and Jayme Fairfield will fill the two, three-year terms.

• Seeley Lake Elementary School District #34: Candidates Gary Wayne and Jody “Doc” will fill the two, three-year terms.

• Sunset School District #30: Candidate Laura Russell-Nygard will fill the open three-year term.

• Swan Valley School District #33: Candidate Sophie Trull will fill the three-year term, Sara Lamar and Kathryn “Kitty” Logan will fill the two open two-year terms and Jesse Russell will fill the one-year term.

The following local Boards have vacant terms, open to new applicants until filled:

• Seeley Cemetery Board: Seeking applicants to fill one three-year term that expires April 30, 2022. The new three-year term begins May 1, 2022 and runs through April 30, 2025. In addition, one vacant seat is open until filled with a term through April 30, 2024.

The board governs and manages the Seeley Lake Cemetery District. Meetings are held at 12 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at Faith Chapel, 3260 Highway 83 N. Applicants must reside and/or own real property in the boundaries of the district, which has the same geographic boundaries as Seeley Lake Elementary School District No. 34.
