OBC presents Alan Weltzien and "Savage West" March 19

SEELEY LAKE - Alan Weltzien's "Savage West : The Life and Fiction of Thomas Savage" is an insightful and remarkable biography. Although Thomas Savage was one of the mountain west's best novelists, he remained virtually unknown to the reading public. Weltzien's biography paints a marvelous picture, not only of Savage's life story, but also as a complement to a major author and his work, coupled with a study of the author's life, family and parts of Montana.

Weltzien will present his book this Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Alpine Artisans' Open Book Club at the Seeley Lake Foundation Building's West Wing. The event is free and everyone is welcome.

Savage wrote 13 novels, eight concerned with the West, the others of New England but with western connections. Savage avoided writing the formula western; his plots and characters were often harsh and complex. The recent release of the award winning film "The Power of the Dog" based on a Savage novel, is an example of this.

In his biography, Weltzien reintroduced us to a major Montana writer. Hopefully, he'll get the exposure he deserves in the future.
