The rise and fall of good and evil in "The Play"

SEELEY LAKE – Thursday, March 3 the Seeley-Swan High School Drama Class took to the stage for the debut of "The Play." SSHS Senior Oskar Murphy wrote the production which he helped direct along with senior Crystal Lopez and Drama Teacher Katy Pellett.

The production opened in the throne room of King Eildue (Oskar Murphy). His kingdom had been attacked. While Prince Freddrich (Tyler Neher) was eager to fight, he was not of age. King Eildue threw him in the dungeon for his over-zealous defense of a "deserter" named Willmus (Cheyenne Gifford).

Princess Kanoria (Hattie Batchelder) returned to fight as well. She quickly learned that King Eildue was as mad as she had heard. He told her that she was necessary only for the "purpose of child bearing" and threw her in the dungeon to help her come to her senses.

With the help of the two-faced Sormanius (Beth Homen) the three escaped from the dungeon and joined forces with three of King Eildue's Knights (Regan Jones, Crystal Lopez and Kyle Doran). Unknowingly they fell right into the trap laid by Sormanius and the evil Vildra (Sky McCallum).

Princess Kanoria is victorious, thanks to the help of Willmus who mustered the courage and confidence to not let self-doubt define his actions. However Prince Freddrich perished in the fight. Kanoria made Willmus a knight and her personal body guard.

"It was really exciting and I think everyone did awesome," Murphy said. "It feels really good to be done but it is a little sad because it is [probably] going to be the only time in history that 'The Play' is performed."

Murphy said he is giving it to SSHS so it can be performed again should they decide to use it.

"There will be multiple Oskar Murphy productions in the future. Just wait," said Murphy.

Pellett was extremely proud of the students and all the work and effort they put into the production.

Pellett said, "It was just great."
