Do I truly seek God?

Passages

When we ask ourselves this question, we must look for the answer in the light of the Biblical definition of seeking, as described in Deuteronomy 4:29: “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with your whole heart and your whole soul.”

We have become so commercialized that we must ask ourselves this question: “Do I truly seek Him, or am I instead seeking a cleaned up version of myself that is filled with the Holy Spirit?

Do I find myself, like the man described in Luke 9:59, saying, “I will follow you but I must first go and bury my father.” Do I let my family, my self-interest, my life come before my God?

It is likely this man’s father had not yet died. He was simply procrastinating; putting his own interests before God.

If we are indeed to follow Him, it must be wholeheartedly.

In Matthew 19 verses 16-30, Jesus is approached by a wealthy young man who asks, “What must I do to achieve eternal life?” He is told to obey the commandments. When he says he has done this his whole life, he then asks. What else must I do? Clearly he understands something is still lacking. Jesus then tells him to sell all he has and give to the poor.

Jesus does not ask this of all believers, but here He recognizes this man’s attachment to his wealth is a barrier to abandonment to God. “Man looks at the external, God looks at the heart.”

We must therefore ask God, “Lord, show me my heart. Is there anything which stands between me and thee?”
