Blackhawks take down Drummond

SEELEY LAKE - Seeley-Swan's fans were in for a special treat Jan. 28 as the Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks hosted long time rival Drummond.

The Drummond Boys came into the game sporting an 11-1 record with their only loss of the season being at the hands of Class B's Powell County.

The Blackhawks got off to a stellar start putting up 19 points to Drummond's 5 in the first quarter and they maintained a comfortable lead through much of the game.

Drummond, however, wasn't going to go down without a fight. In the fourth quarter they came roaring back. With just over three minutes to go, they tied up the game at 38-38. The outlook for the Blackhawks was grim as they had not made a shot in over 5 minutes of play.

A pair of free throws from Sean Mercado put the Blackhawks back on top and Drummond had to shift to fouling to keep the Blackhawks from burning off the clock. The strategy didn't work. While the Blackhawks were denied any field goals in the fourth quarter they managed to put in 11 free throws to win 48-40.

Mercado lead the Blackhawks with 13 points including hitting 7 of 8 attempted free throws all in the final quarter. Chase Haines and Jason James were close behind with 9 points each followed by Walker McDonald and Ben Haley each with 5. Klayton Kovatch and Owen Hoag rounded out the points with 4 and 3 respectively.

The Drummond girls put up a good fight early in the game even leading at times. Not far into the second quarter the Lady Blackhawks took control of the game thanks in part to three-pointers from Sariah Maughan, Tegan Mauldin and a pair from Emily Maughan.

The Lady Blackhawks had a commanding lead by the half and never looked back. The final score was 72-50.

Three Lady Blackhawks scored into the double digits with E. Maughan putting up 21 points followed by S. Maughan with 17 and Mauldin with 11. Also scoring: Dani Sexton 9, Kyla Conley 6, Mia Saalfeld 4, Aubrey Matthew 2 and Ava Thornsberry 2.

This week Seeley-Swan heads to Darby Feb. 4 with the JV Girls starting at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 5 is Senior Night and they are hosting Granite with JV Boys starting at 1:30 p.m.
