BUTTE, MONTANA – The Ground Water Assessment Steering Committee finished ranking nominated projects for the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology’s Ground Water Investigation Program (MBMG/GWIP) Nov. 15. Seeley Lake’s nominated project to help understand the nitrogen contamination in groundwater fell just short of the fundable projects.
In an email to the Missoula County-City Health Department, the nominator for Seeley Lake’s project, GWIP Manager Ginette Abdo explained that Seeley’s project fell just below the number of projects that MBMG could afford to start in 2022.
“That said, this summer we plan to re-evaluate our resources to see if we can put some effort towards gathering information that can help the community understand the nitrate issue,” wrote Abdo.
Seeley’s project received a total score of 14 points to put it in a three-way tie in fourth place. The top two projects are in Billings and Eureka. They received 18 and 16 points respectively. Also getting the green light is a hybrid of the third ranked project titled Irrigation and a project in the Big Hole River area.
