Lady Blackhawks down Bobcats, take second at tournament

The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks volleyball team faced the Superior Bobcats Aug. 26 in their first match of the season and then headed to Drummond Aug. 28 for a tournament.

The Lady Blackhawks made quick work of the Bobcats winning three sets in a row, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-23.

Sariah Maughan led the Lady Blackhawks in kills and assists with 14 and 11 respectively while Dani Sexton had 6 aces and Trista Wendel led in digs with 16.

Lady Blackhawks Head Coach Pattie Crum was pleased with the win, especially being that they only had eight eligible girls for the match. She expects the team to be at full strength next week as the rest of the girls get in the required number of practices and become eligible.

At the tournament in Drummond, the Lady Blackhawks rolled past Gardner 25-17, St. Regis 25-10 and Dummond 25-16 in morning pool play.

In the afternoon the tournament shifts to the best-of-three-sets with 15-point matches. Sets have to be won by two points or more. The Lady Blackhawks first faced Superior and defeated them in two close games 20-18 and 16-14.

In the semifinal, the Lady Blackhawks faced Granite losing the first set 19-21 and then came back to win two in a row 15-12 and 15-13.

The Lady Blackhawks fell to Charlo in the final and took second place.

“After watching these young ladies in action this weekend, I have all the confidence in the world we have the talent to go places,” said Crum.

This week the Lady Blackhawks host Valley Christian Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. and then head to Lincoln Sept. 4.
