No northern pike found in Placid Lake

PLACID LAKE – Saturday, Aug. 28 divers and snorkelers spent the day on Placid Lake searching for any evidence of northern pike. For the second year of this underwater effort, no pike were detected using this method.

During routine monitoring in early May 2020, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks discovered a northern pike in Placid Lake. The Fish and Wildlife Commissioners declared that the fish must be killed and reported when caught.

Clearwater Resource Council organized a spearfishing event with the Missoula-based spearfishing club, FWP and the Placid Lake Cabin Owners Association in July 2020 in an effort to find and kill any northern pike. No pike were spotted.

FWP Fisheries Biologists Ladd Knotek and FWP Missoula Regional Fisheries Manager Pat Saffel snorkeled Saturday with five divers from Underwater Soldiers in Kalispell.  Placid Lake residents Bob and Shannon Lukes, Tom Joehler and Ted Schuster volunteered to shuttle the divers around the lake.

"Thank you to all who made the day a success," wrote CRC Executive Director Caryn Miske. "We couldn't have done it without a team effort!"
