GREENOUGH - Students from Sunset School ended their school year with a bang as they performed a drum concert inspired by West African music for family members Friday, May 21. The students had been training with Matthew Nord, who teaches African rhythms for Tangled Tones Music Studio in Missoula, for about five sessions over the course of two months.
In between performances, Nord educated audience members on the various drums they were using in the set including djembes, dunun, sangbans, kenkenis and ashikos.
"They're a great group of young kids," he said. "I enjoyed working with them and sharing the music with them. They're amazing listeners and very quick learners. They're all very respectful of the time and I really appreciate that."
Following the performance, family members were able to observe students' artwork that was culminated over the course of the school year. Pieces were displayed in another classroom and included mediums such as paintings, sculptures and mixed media. Supervising Teacher Toni Hatten expressed appreciation for art teacher Ashley Mitchell for her contributions to the program.
