Local author shares writing and publishing experience

GREENOUGH - Author Tanya Fyfe spoke with Sunset Elementary School students about her new book, "Lost and Found in Missing Lake," as well as her writing process during their class Friday, May 14. After a brief presentation she answered questions from the fifth through eighth grade class.

Fyfe shared her personal experiences and how they impacted the creation of the book. She spoke about her upbringing in a small town before moving to Vancouver, Canada where she trained as a figure skater. She also spoke about her time as a veterinarian and how it inspired the development of her characters.

There are four books in Fyfe's Missing Lake series, the latest being "The Runaways of Missing Lake," which follows the adventures of 16-year-old Luke Houser. She said when she was writing her first book, she did not have a process and just began typing. In her second book she incorporated more dialogue. In the third book she allowed the interpersonal relationships to "take over."

When asked if she had tips for any aspiring writers, she encouraged students to write as much as possible.

"I started [writing in a journal] when I was eight," she said. "That's 40 years of journals that I've got. And I wrote in high school. I wrote in college."

Supervising Teacher Toni Hatten said that they featured another local author Karma Wilson from Potomac earlier this year and thought that it was a great opportunity for their students to learn about writing.

"Tanya has been receiving some notable attention for her book series and we thought she'd be another worthy author for our students to visit with," Hatten said.

Fyfe said this was the first time her book has been used in a school's curriculum.
