SEELEY LAKE - Two Seeley-Swan boys qualified for state this past week following the tournament in Canyon River Tuesday, May 4 and the Wayne Cahoon Memorial Golf Tournament Thursday, May 6. In addition, the girls placed first overall in the Wayne Cahoon Memorial Golf Tournament at the Double Arrow Golf Course in Seeley Lake scoring 353, four strokes ahead of Plains.
Bethany Hoag led the Blackhawks on her home course. She placed fourth overall with a score of 110. Cora Stone was second among her team members, placing eighth overall in the tournament with a score of 116. She said she is new to the sport and, while some aspects have been frustrating, she has ultimately found the experience rewarding.
Tegan Mauldin placed 10th with a score of 127. Ava Thornsberry scored a 143 while Trista Wendel followed right behind with a 149.
Hoag said it was nice to be able to play on their home course after their golf season was canceled last year.
"The maintenance guys have done a really good job," she said. "I know the snow was a detriment, but we're out here now and it's beautiful. I was going to do golf last year and we didn't have it so I think it'll be super cool [to compete at State]."
All five girls have qualified for this year's State Meet at previous meets. SSHS Activities Director Shawn Holmes said that the last time the school has sent a girls team to State was in 2014.
Boys golfer Kase Anderson will now be heading to state after a three-way tie for 15th place in the Wayne Cahoon Memorial Golf Tournament with a score of 99, one stroke under the qualifying score of 100 for boys. He will join his teammate Ben Haley who qualified at the Canyon River golf tournament in Missoula Tuesday, May 4 with a score of 97.
In addition to Anderson also playing in the Wayne Cahoon tournament: Haley led the team with 98 placing 14th; Seth Richardson, 102; Casey Carver, 110; Cullen Bertsch, 125; Connor Matthew, 132; Aaron Jungers, 142 and Cadence Mauldin, 156.
Full results were not available at time of press from the Canyon River Golf Tournament. However Head Coach Kellen Palmer wrote in an email that Haley led the Blackhawks with 97, Carver shot a 101, Anderson shot a 102 and Richardson shot a 115. He is very excited to have additional players qualify for the state tournament.
"We have one more tournament ... in Plains and I'm hopeful a couple more will qualify so we can take a full [boys] team to state!" he said.
