Legislative Update - Senate District 46
The legislative session came to an end last week. It was truly an honor to serve you and look out for your interests in Helena. Thank you.
While on the campaign trail, I tried to make no promises but shared my intent to work hard with my fellow legislators and focus on what we all have in common: a desire to have a good job that pays the bills and puts food on the table...and allows us a bit of time to enjoy with family and friends. This was my first session as a legislator but even experienced folks are noting the same theme from the 2021 session: partisan politics were more prevalent than ever before. To be honest, it was a disappointment.
A highlight for me was a handful of bills that addressed the teacher shortage in rural areas by offering incentives for first year teachers and remote learning so locals can have access to quality education.
As I designed and read bills and gathered information from constituents, other lawmakers and those who implement the laws, I spent a great deal of time thinking about intent versus impact. Many of the hundreds of bills introduced had great intentions, from both sides of the aisle but I remain concerned about the impacts of the following:
• Tax Cuts for the Wealthy – at the expense of essential services
• Election Laws – in an effort to increase security, we limited access to voting
• Changes to the Judicial Branch – opening the door for partisan influence
• Freedom and local control threatened – many local laws were reversed by state control
On the brighter side, we have record funding coming into our state from the federal government to stimulate the economy and keep our schools, bridges and special projects alive. This includes broadband so folks can access good Internet for medical care, work meetings or social time with family and friends.
I'll be serving on multiple committees in the interim between sessions and I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts and concerns. I especially want to understand how my intentions may have impacts I haven't considered. Please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 406-274-3805 or email me at ShannonforMontana@gmail.com.
My husband Chuck, my son Carter (age 12) and I wish you and yours all the best, for Mother's Day, graduations and a sunny season ahead. May our skies be free of smoke and our tables be set with fresh food. I'll look for you on the trails and at the Seeley Lake Sunday Market this summer!
Best, Shannon
