Public comments welcome at RAC meeting April 29

SEELEY LAKE - The Missoula Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) is allowing members of the public to make comments before or during their meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 29 regarding recommended funding for local project proposals. Among the 13 listed proposals are Morrell Creek and Seeley Lake bear attractant removal/conflict, both of which are expected to receive up to $15,000.

Last year the Missoula RAC recommended funding 13 projects to benefit the region in multiple ways including improving watersheds, treating noxious weeds, managing trails and maintaining wildlife. The Morrell Creek Project involves restoring Morrell Creek through Seeley Lake. By reconnecting the stream with its floodplain, installing willow cuttings and relocating a road that runs along a portion of the stream, there will be less sedimentation in the stream and habitat conditions will improve for bull trout and westslope cutthroat.

The funding for the Bear Attractant Removal/Conflict Project would go towards assessing different sanitation needs in the community. Sites with frequent known conflicts would be prioritized while sites in need of bear resistant containers or bear proof structures would follow.

To comment contact Missoula RAC coordinator Kate Jerman at katelyn.jerman@usda.gov or call 406-552-7944. Jerman said they prefer the public submit their comments in advance but people will also have three minutes to make their comment or ask questions during the meeting.

Meeting details, including how to join, will be posted prior to the meeting at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/lolo/workingtogether/advisorycommittees/?cid=fseprd898783.
