Seeley Lake resident and J&E Contracting Owner Ed Jungers was announced as Montana Tree Farm Program's 2020 Logger of the Year in January for his dedicated participation in the industry and his early adoption of Cut-to-Length logging technology.
SEELEY LAKE - J&E Contracting Owner-Operator Ed Jungers received Montana Tree Farm Program's (MTFP) 2020 Logger of the Year. Jungers started the logging company with his father John over 20 years ago.
Part of the reason he was nominated was for his early adoption of Cut-to-Length (CTL) logging equipment in the state of Montana. According to the MTFP Facebook post recognizing Jungers, CTL is an "innovative approach to forest management [and] is particularly adept at utilizing small diameter trees and having minimal impact in the woods."
The post stated that Jungers was efficient in his work at multiple Tree Farm properties across the state.
"[H]is ability to transform imperiled landscapes back into healthy vibrant forests is worthy of recognition," the post said. "Eddy's calm and forthright manner provides landowners the reassurance that their forest is in good hands and the land will be managed by a professional."
MTFP Past Program Chair Jared Richardson submitted the nomination for Jungers.
According to Richardson in his nomination, Jungers performed forest restoration projects on the McKelvey Tree Farm in Clancy where he addressed mountain pine beetles' effect on forest health as well as participated in fuel reduction, downfall cleanup, timber harvest, aspen restoration, slash piling, road maintenance and culvert installation. He also performed forest management projects on the 4,000-acre Potter Tree Farm in Greenough.
"Eddy was able to turn skeptical and picky landowners who preferred to do things themselves to proponents of professional loggers, specialized equipment and technical knowledge," Richardson stated.
Jungers was also nominated because of his frequent participation in forest related workshops as well as his commitment to Best Management Practices.
"I have worked with Eddy for over a decade on a multitude of projects, some complicated and some not," Richardson said in the form. "I have audited his work to two different [Sustainable Forestry Initiative] standards and for three different companies and have never found a single violation."
