SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks opened their basketball season with victories over the Clark Fork Coop Mountain Cats Jan. 2. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Boys played at home while the Ladies were on the road.
Blackhawks
The Blackhawks traded shots with the Cats throughout the first quarter and were able to build a 13-point lead in the second quarter. They maintained their distance in the third but the Cats were not going to go home quietly.
The Cats came out shooting in the final frame racking up nearly half their game points in a matter of minutes. The Blackhawks fought back feeding the ball to Jason James who scored three, three-pointers and Sawyer Shelmerdine who added in three baskets of his own and a couple of free throws. The Blackhawks managed to hold off the Cats for the 62-58 victory.
Shelmerdine led the Blackhawks scoring 11 baskets and 6 free throws for 28 points followed by 14 points from James. Quinlan Ream and Chase Haines scored 9 and 7 respectively while Seth Richardson and Klayton Kovatch scored 2 each.
Lady Blackhawks
The Lady Blackhawks found themselves trailing the Mountain Cats early in the game but soared through the second half outscoring the Cats two to one. The final score was 58-39.
The Maughan sisters, Emily and Sariah led the Lady Blackhawks with 14 points each. Emily scored all of hers with two-pointers while Sariah sunk a pair of three-pointers and 4, two-pointers.
Bethany Hoag also hit a pair of three-pointers on her way to 9 points in the game. Klaire Kovatch put in 6 baskets for 12 points. Dani Sexton added 3 points while Trista Wendel and Rose Mercer each scored 2.
