Seeley Lake celebrates veterans' legacies

SEELEY LAKE - Over 20 residents came together to celebrate the lives and memories of those who served in the American military for Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Veterans Memorial Garden.

Following a group prayer, Veterans and Families of Seeley Lake (VFSL) President Barbara Knopp made a speech honoring those who gave their time and lives during war.

"We're here today to honor our service members past and present and to remember their sacrifices they have made and the courage it takes to defend honor, duty and country," Knopp said. "We're here today to honor our heroes, to remember their achievements, their courage and their dedication, and to say thank you for their sacrifices and thinking of the heroes who would join us in this group today and those who are here only in spirit."

Knopp said VFSL and those in attendance are grateful for those who answered the call of duty including those who were drafted.

"We know you lived through difficult times and often took the heavy load to keep the home fires burning," she said. "Many of them didn't ask to leave their homes to fight on distant battlefields. Many didn't even volunteer. They didn't go to war because they loved fighting. They were called to be part of something bigger than themselves."

She reminded listeners that freedom is not free.

"Millions of Americans have fought and died on battlefields here and abroad to defend our freedoms and way of life," she said. "Thousands have paid the price so you and I can enjoy what we have today."

According to her, Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day to celebrate the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. However, over the years the holiday has evolved to honor all American veterans.

Knopp said the skeletal structure of the new veterans memorial kiosk has been completed, however it will not be until spring 2021 where the structure's new metal plates will be installed.
