Bighorns end Lady Blackhawks' season

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks hosted the Lone Peak Bighorns in their opening match of the Western C Divisional Tournament Nov. 3.

The Lady Blackhawks were able to build enough of a lead in the middle of the first game to hold off a late rally by the Bighorns for the 25-22 win.

The teams traded shots early in game two but the Lady Blackhawks soon found themselves trailing by a half dozen points. They fought hard, closing to within a couple of points late in the game, but the Bighorns prevailed 21-25.

The Lady Blackhawks could do no right in the third game. The Bighorns built a 10-point lead by the time the Lady Blackhawks even touched the scoreboard. The Bighorns were up to 15 by the time the Lady Blackhawks put up their second point. The Lady Blackhawks fell 10-25.

The Lady Blackhawks were not ready to bow out yet and pulled off a 25-22 victory in the fourth game.

Neither team wanted to go home empty handed making for a tense fifth game. The Lady Blackhawks built a sizable 13-8 lead but then stalled out. The Bighorns rallied for six straight points and then ended the Lady Blackhawks' season 14-16.

The Lady Blackhawks finished out the season with a 16-4 record.

Lady Blackhawks Head Coach Shelby Holmes said that while the outcome against the Bighorns didn't go their way, the girls battled with everything they had.

The Lady Blackhawks had nearly 70 digs in the match with Klaire Kovatch, Bethany Hoag, Dani Sexton and Sariah Maughan all digging into the double digits.

Hoag led the Lady Blackhawks in kills with 12 followed by Kovatch and Maughan with 11 each. Kovatch had 3 blocks while Hoag had 2. Jordan Johnson was credited with 28 assists and Trista Wendel had 4 of the teams 9 aces.

Holmes said it was a special year to get to coach the Lady Blackhawks. She and Coach Alyssa Harris will miss the seniors.

"They are truly a special group of girls and they brought our program to a different level. We are excited to build on the legacy the seniors left next year," said Holmes.
