Choices in conflict

I found the letter to the Pathfinder titled “Vote like life depends on it” interesting and I thank the Pathfinder for printing the varied views of the community. I do have several concerns about the view expressed.

First, the author’s view is based on her Christian belief. As most of you are aware, our country was founded on the idea of the separation of church and state. Mostly this was out of concern that people did not want the state messing with their religious freedoms. I believe turnabout is fair play.

Why should a church be able to get their belief put into public law? What if the Jewish and Muslim believers decided we should ban the eating of pork because that is a part of their religion? Yup, no bacon, no ham and no pork in your pork sausage. You’d all go ballistic! So, what I am telling you is this. It is okay to have your religious beliefs but don’t force them onto the rest of us who don’t buy into your beliefs.

The Bible has 10 Commandments that read “Thou shall” or “Thou shall not” in front of each commandment. That “Thou” refers to YOU. It does not refer to the rest of us who may not buy into all of the rules and regulations dictated by your particular religion.

Second, your support of the conservative political movement because they support your view on abortion is baffling. You know that these same conservatives only want lower taxes so they can protect their wealth and make more on the backs of the poor. They also have no respect for the creation that Our Creator has made because they believe in abusing the environment for their personal gain. Why else would they be climate change deniers?

They build their fortunes on the backs of the poor and hardworking middle class. These conservatives want the richest one percent to gain wealth while the rest suffer. Is this behavior really what you want to support? They spend their millions on political advertisements trying to get that 99% to support them by selecting some hot button issue like abortion. If you buy it, you are a sucker.

Third, I believe these same conservatives would describe Christ as a “nasty Liberal Socialist.” It is interesting that they tell you they respect life but in reality they don’t care about people. These conservatives strive to take away people’s social support systems and health insurance. Is that really what you want to support?

Bottom line is, enjoy your religious freedoms and pray that our system of government can survive all the lies, mistruths and influences of people trying to manipulate our system to gain power for themselves and their organizations, both religious and political.

Please allow women the choice to decide issues about their bodies. Maybe it is time to rethink your political affiliations. Also, remember the “Thou” is for YOU!
