SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks had a busy week hosting Clark Fork Sept. 29 and Drummond Oct. 1 and traveled to Darby Oct. 3.
The Lady Blackhawks made quick work of the Clark Fork Co-op Mountain Cats defeating them in three sets 25-20, 25-8 and 25-12.
Bethany Hoag led the Lady Blackhawks with 7 kills while Ava Thornsberry, Klaire Kovatch and Sariah Maughan served up 4 aces each. Kovatch led the defense with 5 blocks and 6 digs.
Drummond proved to be a more worthy adversary. After the Lady Blackhawks took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-18, Drummond came back to win three in a row to take the match 15-25, 18-25 and 11-15.
From her perspective, Kovatch said she felt they lost the match due to having holes in their coverage and their own ball control issues like passing the ball into the net.
"The good thing about all that stuff is that it can be adjusted. We can build on that. It shows us where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on," said Kovatch.
Kovatch said dealing with those issues during a game makes it hard to put together a good offense and forces the team to constantly play defense. The stats show the issue as the Lady Blackhawks had 45 digs to just 22 kills. For comparison, during the Clark Fork match they had 17 digs to 14 kills.
Maughan and Dani Sexton took the brunt of Drummond's attack with 13 and 10 digs respectively. Kovatch and Hoag led at the net with 6 kills each while Trista Wendel scored on 4 aces.
The Lady Blackhawks put up a good fight two days later in Darby to win the match in four sets 25-9, 25-12, 25-27 and 25-14.
This week the Lady Blackhawks head to Philipsburg Oct. 8 and then host Victor for their Homecoming Oct. 10. Check the Seeley-Swan High School Activities Facebook page for updates and live streaming of games.
