Blackhawks join in solidarity with Bulldogs

ST IGNATIUS – The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks headed over the mountains to take on the Bulldogs Sept. 18.

Ahead of the game the Blackhawks accepted an invitation to participate in a presentation and discussion on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The Blackhawks and Bulldogs stood together as one team during the presentation.

In a letter of gratitude and thanks to Seeley-Swan's coaches and athletes, St. Ignatius' Principal Shawn Hendrickson explained that St. Ignatius has students and staff who have family members and friends who are currently missing or have been murdered.

"In a time of uncertainty, political division and the new COVID normal, two teams from different worlds were able to come together as one, over an important social issue," wrote Hendrickson.

Blackhawks Head Coach Jay Crum said it was a good opportunity for the Blackhawks to become aware of a serious situation happening on the state's reservations and hopes that our kids can be part of the solution in the future.

After the moment of solidarity the Blackhawks and Bulldogs got down to business.

The Blackhawks had a rough start falling behind 6-36 in the first quarter and slipped another 14 points behind by the half.

In the second half, they outplayed the Bulldogs but were unable to close the gap left in the first half. The Blackhawks fell 34-72.

Walker McDonald led the Blackhawks in points with a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion. McDonald also completed 13 of 25 passes including connecting with Owen Hoag and Ben Haley for two touchdowns. McDonald passed for 240 yards hitting Sawyer Shelmerdine 9 times for 145 of those yards.

Eric Lorentz led the Blackhawks on the ground rushing for 95 yards on 19 carries.

The Blackhawks are back at home this week taking on Clark Fork with kickoff at 7 p.m. Sept. 25. Check the Seeley-Swan High School Activities Facebook page for updates.
