Lady Blackhawks defeat Pirates, fall to Prospectors

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks faced two opponents last week starting off in Victor Sept. 10 and then back on the home court Sept. 12 facing Granite.

The Lady Blackhawks blew the Victor Pirates out of the water in three sets, 25-19, 25-9 and 25-16.

More than a third of their total points against the Pirates came from kills and aces. Bethany Hoag led the way with 8 kills followed by Klaire Kovatch, Kyla Conley and Aspen Conley with 4 each. Sariah Maughan had two kills and led with 3 aces.

The Lady Blackhawks faced a more formidable foe hosting the Prospectors from Granite.

They came out strong putting the Prospectors down in the first two sets 25-14 and 25-15.

Trouble for the Lady Blackhawks started early in the third set as they quickly fell a half dozen points behind and could not recover. The Prospectors took the set 18-25.

The Lady Blackhawks came on strong again in the fourth set taking an early lead and holding the Prospectors back until their momentum stalled. They watched their 17-10 lead evaporate and they were caught at 19-19. The teams traded shots for the next few points but then the Prospectors rallied for the final five points taking the set 21-25.

The final set kept the fans on the edge of their seats through the first ten points as the Lady Blackhawks and Prospectors battled for the lead. The Lady Blackhawks stalled out at 10 points and dropped the set 10-15 giving the match to the Prospectors.

Senior Jordan Johnson said the Lady Blackhawks knew it would be a tough match and were focusing on three things: starting off strong, consistency and confidence. While they were successful in the strong start she felt they lost some confidence toward the end and it cost them.

The Lady Blackhawks had 16 aces in the match with Maughan scoring half of them followed by Kovatch with 5. Maughan led in blocks with 5 while Kovatch led in kills with 11 followed by Hoag with 10. Aspen and Johnson led with 15 and 12 assists respectively.

This week the Lady Blackhawks host Darby Sept. 17 and then head to Drummond Sept. 19. Check the Seeley-Swan High School Activities Facebook page for updates and live streaming of games.
